Handwoven Baskets: Oh My!

Handwoven Baskets: Oh My!

Look at these stunning baskets; they're works of art! Their fall hues and impressive size will make a statement in any room. Plus, the incredible story behind them makes them even more special.
In the fall of 2019, we stumbled upon RIDE 4 A WOMAN during a trip to Uganda to see the endangered mountain gorillas. Before our gorilla trek, we were captivated by a group of women dancers from the organization. Intrigued, we decided to visit their community center after our trek. (The gorillas were amazing by the way!)
RIDE 4 A WOMAN was founded in 2009 by Evelyne Habasa and her husband Denis Rubalema. Their mission is to empower women struggling with poverty, domestic violence, HIV, and other challenges, providing them with opportunities for a brighter future.

Over 100 women have been trained in sewing and basket weaving at RIDE 4 A WOMAN. Sixty of these talented women work at the R4W center, creating the beautiful handmade baskets and fabric products you can find on Intertwined's website. The rest have gone on to start their own businesses, earning a living independently, which fills us with immense joy. At RIDE 4 A WOMAN, these women find safety, support, and a sense of belonging. They form strong bonds with one another, discover a sense of purpose, and earn a fair wage that helps them and their families thrive.
We spent part of our day at RIDE 4 A WOMAN learning how to weave baskets, and it was no easy feat! The women are true experts, and my attempts were laughable. But with lots of guidance and support, I managed to create a small coaster.

Evelyn, Denis, and the incredible women and supporters of RIDE 4 A WOMAN embody the Margaret Mead quote: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world: indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has." As part of the Intertwined community, you too are making a difference!
