Made from vintage huipiles and traditional corte textiles, each bag is one of a kind.
Guatemalan Textile & Leather Bags
Handcrafted from vintage Mayan textiles and vegetable-tanned leather, these one-of-a-kind bags carry both history and function. Each piece begins as a handwoven huipil or corte—then is carefully reimagined into a bag designed to be used every day.
Questions, answered
What is a huipil bag?
A huipil bag is made from a traditional Mayan garment called a huipil. These textiles are handwoven on a backstrap loom and often feature patterns specific to a region or community. The fabric is then repurposed into a bag, giving it a second life.
Are your bags truly one of a kind?
Yes. Because each bag is made from vintage textiles, no two pieces are exactly the same. The colors, patterns, and details will vary from bag to bag.
What is the difference between huipil and corte textiles?
Huipiles are traditional blouses, often featuring detailed patterns and embroidery. Cortes are woven skirts, typically made on foot looms with more linear or repeating designs. Both are handwoven and carry distinct regional characteristics.
Are these bags durable for everyday use?
Yes. The textiles are paired with vegetable-tanned leather and constructed for daily use. While the fabrics are vintage, they are selected and reinforced to ensure the bags hold up over time.
How are the bags made?
Each bag is made in Guatemala by Lorenzo Xum Ortiz and his team. They work with vintage handwoven textiles and combine them with leather to create structured, functional bags.
Where do the textiles come from?
The textiles are sourced from vintage huipiles and cortes in Guatemala. Many have been worn and used before being carefully repurposed into bags.
Are these bags ethically made?
We work directly with artisan partners in Guatemala and pay upfront for production. Each bag is made in small batches by skilled makers using traditional techniques and thoughtfully sourced materials.
Will my bag look exactly like the photos?
Yes, we photograph the bags individually so you will receive the exact bag shown on the product page.
Bags that didn’t stay long
Each bag is made from vintage textiles, so once it sells, it’s gone. We continue to add new pieces as they’re made.
